Activities for Everyone at Lory State Park in June

BELLVUE, CO (June 2021) – With the weather warming, there’s no better way to enjoy the outdoors than going to your local state park, and this June there is something for everyone! Lory State Park offers activities, program, and events for all ages and backgrounds May through October with support from Friends of Lory State Park (FoLSP).

Check out the calendar listing below, which includes some offerings for children and adults at the same time so the entire family can enjoy the Park. All activities and programs are free, but participants must have a valid park pass. Some activities have limited capacity, so be sure to call the Lory State Park Visitor Center at (970) 493-1623 or email DNR_loryinterp@state.co.us to reserve your spot.

Lory State Park targets specific age groups for some programs to facilitate age-appropriate learning and fun. For example, our Pinecones are for children ages 3-6, and our Junior Rangers are for ages 7-12. Friday June 4TH – Starry Nights at Soldier Canyon Picnic Area 8:30pm-11:00pm

Join Lory staff and experts from the NOCO Astronomical Society for an evening exploring the night sky. Equipment provided by the NOCO Astronomical Society. We will also have a bonfire and S’MORES! All ages and backgrounds welcome.

Friday June 4TH – Junior Rangers (Ages 7-12) Astronomer-in-Training at Soldier Canyon Picnic Area 8:30pm-11:00pm

Join Lory staff and experts from the NOCO Astronomical Society for an evening exploring the night sky. Equipment provided by the NOCO Astronomical Society. Junior Rangers will learn how to make constellation maps!

Sunday June 6TH – Free Fishing Day at Horse Pasture Pond 11:00am-3:00pm

Each year, CPW offers a weekend of free fishing to encourage getting outside and enjoying the many fishing opportunities in our state. Join Lory staff at Horse Pasture Pond in Bellvue, next to Watson Lake Fish Hatchery. No fishing or park permits required. Fishing poles provided while supplies last! Learn to tie knots and other fishing skills. For GPS directions, use Bellvue, Watson Lake Fish Hatchery. This event is open for all ages, and we strongly encourage you to bring your Pinecones (ages 3-6) and Junior Rangers (ages 7-12) to this event, too!

Saturday June 12th – Wildflower Guided Hike at Well Gulch 10:00am-11:30am

Join Colorada botany expert, Ted Schaaf, for a guided hike along the Well Gulch Nature Trail. Watter bottle and closed-toed shoes required. Meet at the Well Gulch Trailhead. All ages and backgrounds welcome.

Saturday June 12th – Pinecone (Ages 3-6) Sensory Digs 1:00pm  

Bring your little Pinecones, kids ages 3-6, out to dig in sensory boxes and start learning the principles of Leave No Trace. Kids will be looking for natural versus non-natural things in their boxes. Meet at the South Eltuck Picnic Area at 1:00pm.

Sunday June 13TH – Beekeeping Day with Copoco’s Honey 11:00am-1:00pm

Beekeepers from Copoco’s Honey will share information about caring for honeybees and the process of harvesting honey. Delicious honey samples provided! This event will take place in the Lory State Park Visitor Center Conference Room. All ages and backgrounds welcome.

Saturday June 26TH – Starry Nights at Soldier Canyon Picnic Area 8:30pm-11:00pm

Sunday June 27TH – Junior Birding at Well Gulch 11:00am

Bring out your Junior Rangers (ages 7+) to explore the 1.5-mile nature trail looking for migratory and native Colorado birds. Meet at Well Gulch Trailhead at 11:00am.

Wednesday June 30TH – Pinecones (Ages 3-6) Summer Color at Timber Picnic Area 11:00am

Help the park create a mural that we will display in the Visitor Center! Pinecones will fingerpaint with inspiration from native plants and flowers and learn to do crayon rubbings of leaves. Meet at Timber Picnic Area at 11:00am.
